#11 - You’ll Develop Better Social Skills

Studies show that constant exposure to digital media has impaired our interpersonal skills.

In 2014, the journal Computers in Human Behavior compared two groups of preteens. One group had constant access to their phones and other devices. The other group had no such access. The authors found that the latter group enjoyed increased social interaction since its members were spending less time with their gadgets. As a result, they were better able to recognize nonverbal, emotional cues, a critical skill in establishing social bonds.

Adults are also impacted by the social consequences of overexposure to digital media. In early 2014, Justine Harmon, senior editor for the magazine Elle, wrote a feature titled “How Social Media Is Ruining My Social Skills.” She noted that spending time on websites like Instagram had begun to affect how she interacted with people she met face-to-face. In a Huffington Post interview following her feature, she opined that overuse of social media is “the death of an actual civilized conversation.”

Online networking, whether done through email, texts, or social media, is a completely different dynamic than interacting face to face. Other online pursuits, such as watching YouTube videos, playing video games, and reading news headlines, offer no social interaction at all. It’s no wonder so many people have difficulty starting and holding conversations.

A digital detox will improve your ability to communicate face to face. Without access to your phone, computer, and other devices, you’ll be forced to rely on your interpersonal skills. This presents a good opportunity. You’ll become better at listening, maintaining eye contact, and reading body language.
